Replacing Kilby

Tom Humphrey at the Knoxville News Sentinel notes several Republicans, including probable front-runner Jim Henry, who are looking at seeking the Senate Seat currently held by Sen. Tommy Kilby.  Kilby announced earlier that he would not seek re-election.

From Humphrey:

[Jim] Henry, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2002, said he had been “contacted by a lot of people” urging him to seek the seat and “I told them I would consider it.” He said he is focused on the hospitalization of his son, who is developmentally disabled.

Davis said Henry would be a “strong, formidable candidate,” but several other Republicans in the six-county district are also well qualified.

Other prospective Republican candidates include state Rep. William Baird, R-Jacksboro; former state Rep. Bruce Cantrell of Kingston; former state Rep. Mark Goins of LaFollette, who as the Republican nominee was defeated by Kilby in a 2003 special election; and former Roane County Executive Ken Yager.

The Senate would be so much the better with well respected and highly qualified Jim Henry. I can see him as Lt. Gov someday, too.
