New Tax Increases OK’d By Way of “Technical Correction”

The digital download tax is all a go.

Tom Humphrey has the run down for you this morning over at the New Sentinel. I’m glad we’ve got Tom Humphrey in Nashville giving us all the information.

NASHVILLE – The House and Senate have given final approval to the Department of Revenue’s “technical corrections” bill, which in its final form is expected to add about $13.9 million to state tax collections in the coming year.

By Thursday night, the corrections bill had passed both the Senate and House.

The Senate vote was 25-5.

The “Technical Corrections” bill technically increases the government’s grip on your money by about $13.9 million dollars.  That’s 13.9 million dollars that Tennesseans are not able to spend on purchases or investment of their own choosing, but instead must give to state government.

So how did you legislator vote?  I’ve got it for you right here.  Please remember this when they come calling for a vote or a campaign contribution.  Are you running against one of these legislators?  May I suggest a mail piece for you?  Or an auto-call?

Here’s the link to the Tennessee Legislature if you want to do your own research on anything else contained in the bill.  The bill number is SB4173. And via Mr. Humphrey’s article, here’s the pdf file of the fiscal impact of the final bill.

UPDATE: Statewide radio titan Steve Gill sums up with his traditional flavor:

The Republicans in the State Senate rolled over for Governor Phil Bredesen and passed a $14 million tax hike on iPod downloads. They didn’t have the spine to zero out his party bunker, and now they slip a tax increase past most Tennessee voters in the final days of the legislative session. Looks like the spending disease that has infected the RINO (Republican in Name Only) class in Washington has spread to Tennessee.

So what happens to the taxes illegally collected from January to 5/17 when the correction was passed? Will they be refunded or added to the books as a credit on future download taxes? With this is a precedent, what is to prevent the state from illegally collecting taxes based on the assumption that future legislation will be passed that will enable the tax?

This won’t help Woodson, Burchett, MaNally- talk about the quintessential RINOs- geeze, get all you can, you money grubbers! You, too, Mumpower and Baird. . .
